A City with Two Lighthouses

Battery Point Lighthouse, Califonia USAOne of the best things to do during your winter stay in Crescent City is to visit the two lighthouses. Beyond the stunning crescent beach that gives way to the city’s namesake, these two historic towers make for a great day out, traversing the landscape of this quiet town. Situated at California’s most northern point for a lighthouse, you’ll find the Battery Point Lighthouse. Built in 1856, this beautiful beacon of light is only accessible during low-tide. Visitors to this location will see that they will need to be here when the water recedes, to walk the small causeway that becomes exposed, and upwards to the top of the lighthouse. Featuring fantastic views that one can only truly experience if you see it for yourself. Don’t forget to stop by the museum while checking out the lighthouse!

Just a few miles away, you’ll find the second beacon in Crescent City, the Lighthouse at St. George Reef.Built-in 1865 after a disastrous shipwreck of the Brother Jonathan, just off the coast. This stunning place sits right at the bluffs of Point St. George Park, while it is an excellent location if you’re looking for walking trails and public beach access, you’ll also want to keep your eyes peeled for a glimmer within the water. It’s rumored that when the Brother Jonathan sank to the bottom of the sea, it brought with it, quite a bit of gold coins and bullion.

Agate Hunting on the Beach

Agate and Rocks on Beach in CaliforniaAgate hunting is quite a favorite activity for family and groups. Many will scour the coastline in search of a gorgeous agate to bring home. We recommend, when vacationing at one of the house rentals Crescent City CA is known for, you should stop by Pebble Beach! Located right on the city’s west end, you’ll find the scenic Pebble Beach Drive which will bring you directly to the beachfront carrying the same name. Whether you’re on the hunt for a lovely agate or another semi-precious gem, you’re sure to find them all during your stop. As it is the rainy season, packing raingear and sturdy, non-slip boots are ideal for any Northern California vacation, so don’t forget to pack these items when planning on hitting the beach in search of rocks and stones to take home.

When you take incredible vacation homes with amenities like these and combine them with spectacularly low seasonal rates, winter may just be the best time of year to take a redwoods vacation.

It’s true. Redwoods National & State Parks do see the majority of their visitors during the summer month. Each year thousands upon thousands of travelers flock to the far northwest reaches of California to experience what it is like to be amongst the world’s tallest trees. While the weather may indeed be a bit milder, the crowds at the parks can be much larger in summer. For those seeking a redwoods vacation with a bit more solitude, winter months provide just that. And no worries, the forest canopy that towers above serves as an excellent umbrella for those rainier winter days on the redwood coast.

Peace, serenity, and calm are all integral parts of your redwoods vacation and spending the day hiking through the forest can bring you much of those feelings. You’ll love just how beautiful the green and browns of the stunning redwoods meld together. It’s honestly something you won’t want to miss out on this season. With lots of the forest floor for you to explore, precisely 132,000 acres to cover when you spend even a few days here make sure to stop and fall for the beauty of the forest.

KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED

Seastars are found in a tide pool at Salt Point State Park in northern California.

We know that during the autumn and winter months you’ll see many different types of animals on California’s Northern Coast, and you don’t want to keep your eyes shut, or you might miss something spectacular sitting in the trees or jumping through the ocean. Fall brings a lovely time for Tide Pool exposure, featuring lots of underwater life you’ll enjoy seeing sea anemones, mussels, crabs, and more. With the middle intertidal zone open for guests to explore many of these plants and animals find tide pools for food and shelter during low tides at Trinidad State Beach. Learn more about touring some of these great California tide pools at Humboldt State University Marine Lab.

While you’re at the beach, keep your eyes open and on the water for Gray Whales! These beauties call the Redwood Coast their home during the spring and summer months, but during autumn and the late winter months, they migrate to warmer waters from Alaska to Baja California. We recommend seeing them from one of the observation decks that dot Humboldt County’s shoreline. Plus, when you’re hiking, keep an eye out of the Black Bears! From spring to fall these large mammals can be seen throughout the forest they call home before they hibernate during the winter season!

From Green to Yellow

redwood forest vacation
Northern California Landscape. Scenic Vista East From Eureka, Humboldt County, California, United States.

Spring and summer bring a vibrancy of lush, greenery to the Northern California coast. Whether it’s deep in the forest, high above the canopy, or along the walls of Fern Canyon, autumn makes the bright chartreuse and gorgeous viridescent shift to a stunning kaleidoscope of wonderful warm browns, rich purples, and vivacious reds, oranges, and yellows. One of the best times of year to experience this immaculate change is during the harvest season. With California having one of the longest and most diverse fall colors than anywhere else you’ll be surprised to find that at any point during autumn, you can come across a wide array of fall foliage.

While some might assume that the East Coast is where you should be for the fall foliage, truly everywhere along the Northern latitude has the chance to make a memorable impression. The difference in California is that as the elevation drops the colors begin to turn, which means you’ll be able to experience beautiful colors from September through November. The best part is that if you miss peak season on the east, all you have to do is just drive to a lower elevation for you to experience peak season on the west.

According to California Fall Color, right now, the Northern Coast hasn’t begun the transformation into fall, but that means it’s a perfect time to book your redwood forest vacation to ensure you’re here during that peak foliage time! Keep updated with all the fantastic fall foliage reports of California, here!

Meet the Beer Gardens of Humboldt County

Best Beer Garden Humboldt

With October just around the corner right now is the perfect time to book vacation rentals Northern CA style. Just like Germany, Humboldt knows how to celebrate a good Wiesn… Oktober Fest that is.

Every year 6 million people from around the world attend Germany’s 16 to 18-day beer festival held in October. While Humboldt County does not generate nearly quite as much buzz, we still put on our own annual “Hoptober Fest” modeled after the world famous Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich. Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals has the perfect vacation rentals Northern CA to get you up close and well acquainted with the fine craft beers of the Redwood Coast, not only in October but year round in Humboldt’s many beer gardens and tap rooms.

Like Germany, beer drinking is almost culturally ingrained in Humboldt County.

With so many local microbreweries including the U.S.’s first certified organic brewery as well as one of the first female owned breweries, Humboldt has come to be quite proud of our beer brewing heritage here. It is no wonder why the area pays homage to the art of beer brewing each October, but to be completely honest, beer is a year round celebration in these parts.

The beer gardens of Humboldt County are a place to gather, relax, and soak up some serious suds. Whether you are here specifically during the time of Hoptober Fest or not there is always a chance to sample some of the worlds finest craft microbrews while on the Redwood Coast. Here is a list of some of our local faves:

While there are lots of rentals and cottages in this forest town, you might want to check out this cute cabin near Moonstone Beach, that you’ll want to spend your vacation days. Secluded within the woods, there is a particular type of magical feeling you’ll get when arriving at the doorsteps to this haven. Humboldt Bay Provisions-Eureka

We start this adventure in the heart of Old Town Eureka, CA at Humboldt Bay Provisions, an all-local tasting room and oyster bar. Sample Humboldt Bay oysters served raw or broiled with a variety of locally produced gourmet sauces. Or grab a seat at their gorgeous reclaimed redwood bar to sip on local beers, wines, ciders, or kombucha. Humboldt Provisions also serves up cheeses, meats, breads, and desserts that are all hand-crafted locally.

Just around the corner is a local fave, Five Eleven, a new restaurant and bar featuring farm fresh North Pacific cuisine, a fantastic wine selection, a diverse menu of signature cocktails, and great live music. When in season, you simply must try their Dungeness Crab “Cocktail”. So yum!

Another Old Town spot worth checking out for some fine dining is Humboldt Bay Bistro. This bay front restaurant  brings together the ambiance of gorgeous Humboldt Bay views and fabulous cuisine in a California-French fusion.  Their lounge also features excellent local craft beers, wine, and house-infused sake cocktails.

Local Spirits @SpeakEasy

A great place to drop in for a craft cocktail would be The SpeakEasy in Old Town Eureka. The SpeakEasy is a beautiful and cozy New Orleans inspired blues bar that plays jazz and blues music and have live artists nearly everyday. They offer a crazy selection of local spirits, cider, beer, and wine and have signature cocktail that are to die for. My husband I stopped in here on our last trip to Eureka and had some of the best margaritas in our lives and caught a really amazing jazz band with a full horn section too. This place is spectacular for a date night pre-dinner drink.

Perhaps my favorite foodie destination in Eureka though is located just outside of old town in Henderson Center. Brick & Fire Bistro skillfully blends Mediterranean tradition with fresh local harvest. From beautiful seasonal salads and fire-roasted polenta lasagna, to seafood-stuffed calamari and slow-roasted osso bucco, the menu runs from rustic casual to redefined Italian favorites. This place is a must try when in Eureka, CA.

Cafe Phoenix Goodness

Now heading North to Arcata, pay a visit to Cafe Phoenix. Cafe Phoenix works directly with local farmers (meat, dairy and produce), as well as local beer and wine makers to create a menu for you that will be seasonally inspired, healthy and delicious. They have a gorgeous outdoor seating area in their onsite garden. Bonus: This is one of the only places I have found locally that make their own nut milk preparations for use in there smoothies and coffee. If you are health conscious and looking for some serious flavor this is the spot for you.

For fine dining with some serious foodie flair, Folie Douce in Arcata is a fully farm to table restaurant serving seasonal, organic, and local meals. They believe that great meals are made from locally-sourced ingredients, and since 1991, have breathed life into our farm-to-table philosophy by cooking with organic and local produce from the Redwood Coast Region. You really can not go wrong with anything at this place. Just take a peak at their menu and you will see what I mean.

Yet a little further to the north in Trinidad CA is another local fave, Larrupin Cafe. A popular choice for birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions, this upscale, enduring venue offers eclectic decor & locally sourced New American dishes. For a special evening out in Trinidad CA this is where it is at.
