3 Places to Spot Migrating Gray Whales

There are very few sights on Earth that are more jaw-dropping than witnessing a mammoth 40-ton gray whale leaping into the clear blue sky above the Pacific Ocean. Not only is Northern California blessed with awe-inspiring Redwoods, but our coast fills with migrating gray whales every winter as they journey from the Arctic Ocean to the sunny, warm waters near Mexico. Northern California whale watching ranks among the best in North America because these majestic beasts swim so close to our sandy shorelines. You don’t even need to head out onto the sea to witness families of whales heading south for the winter. Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals has homes, condos, cabins, and cottages minutes from Northern California’s best whale watching locales.

Northern California Whale Watching

Most migrations span over 10,000 miles. The same whales that grace our bays in December and January make the same journey northward from March through May back to the chilly Arctic Ocean. If you’re intent on getting up-close-and-personal with a gray whale, we suggest voyaging on an ocean charter or sea kayaking tour. Gray whale migrations can also be witnessed from the beautiful bluffs in Eureka, Trinidad, and Shelter Cove.

Shelter Cove on the Lost Coast

northern california whale watching 4To spot a beautiful gray whale from land, you’ll need these five things: patience, high-quality binoculars, clear skies, early-morning sunshine, and calm winds. Shelter Cove rests 87 miles south of lively Eureka on California’s Lost Coast. Shelter Cove is home to Black Sands Beach and the northbound Lost Coast Central Stretch trail. Not only is this stretch of coastal wilderness genuinely breathtaking, but it’s one of the best places to spot migrating gray whales. The Lost Coast Central Stretch is a difficult hiking trail, but it provides sweeping ocean views. On a bright morning, Black Sands Beach is the perfect spot to relax and patiently wait for families of whales. Orcas are also often spotted near the black shores!

Trinidad Bay Kayak Adventures

Kayaking in the vast Pacific Ocean is fun enough, but Kayak Trinidad has brilliantly added gray whales into the fold. Embark on a kayak tour in Trinidad Bay, and discover the breathtaking beauty of Northern California. You’ll likely see orcas, seals, sea lions, and shorebirds on the journey to meet a 40-ton gray whale. Each tour meanders through rock islands and sea-stacks before and after your North California whale watching adventure. Each tour is led by expert naturalists who’re equally charismatic and knowledgeable.

Patrick’s Point State Park

northern california whale watching 4It’s worth noting that there are many more than three premier Northern California whale watching locations. The last one we’re going to discuss thoroughly is Patrick’s Point State Park, but we also love Table Bluff and Trinidad Head. Patrick’s Point State Park earns the nod because it offers nearly a dozen overlooks. This beautiful state park has views from Rim Trail, Mussel Rocks, Agate Beach, Wedding Rock, Palmer’s Point, Rocky Point, and Patrick’s Point. Each lookout provides gorgeous ocean vistas and advantageous whale watching on clear mornings. Patrick’s Point State Park is only five miles north of Trinidad.

Northern California Vacations

Shelter Cove Vista Cabin

northern california whale watching 4The ocean-view Shelter Cove Vista Cabin is minutes from Cape Mendocino Lighthouse and two miles south of Black Sands Beach. This lovely cottage is steps from fishing, kayaking, and whale watching. The sunsets at Shelter Cove are particularly beautiful (as are moonlit evenings). You’ll have 1,610 square feet of space, outdoor lounging, and a full kitchen all within walking distance of the ocean.

Famous Pink Lady

northern california whale watching 4Spend the whole week inside a classic Victorian mansion one mile from Humboats Kayak Adventures in charming Eureka. You’ll have the opportunity to take a step back in time during your Northern California whale watching getaway. This three-story manor was built in 1889 and has been meticulously preserved ever since. The Famous Pink Lady is a popular wedding, anniversary, and honeymoon destination, so please call well in advance to book a reservation.

Seawoods Farmhouse

northern california whale watching 4A quiet farmhouse in the lush Northern California wilderness rests within walking distance of Patrick’s Point State Park. Seawoods Farmhouse, a cozy, affordable, and secluded paradise, has an onsite hobby farm, enchanting pond, and organic vegetable garden. Halloween of the Redwood Coast

Halloween on the Redwood Coast is something rather unique. Haunted Houses tend to take on a new form here. By far, one of Humboldt’s most twisted and horrific traditions is The Haunted Kinetic Lab, an annual guided freak show tour at the Kinetic Sculpture Lab in the little town of Arcata, CA. Taking place during the week leading up to Halloween, this is a hair-raising experience not to be missed.

northern california fall getaways For those traveling to the area with little ones, the areas expansive pumpkin patches and corn mazes are great alternative to the Haunted Lab. Warren Creek Farm has 25 varieties of pumpkins growing, including the bright red-orange Cinderellas. Travel through their giant corn maze and out into the pumpkin patch to choose your own pumpkin, or just drop into the farm stand to choose from pre-picked pumpkins, squash, beans and potatoes fresh from the organic farm. Be sure to take in the breeze, the pastures and the towering sunflowers while you are there.

Kids also get the opportunity to join in a fun little Halloween Parade around the square so they can show of their costumes!

northern california fall getways Downtown Arcata is definitely something else come Halloween. There are usually tons of parties and events going on and of course lots of of late night shenanigans taking places all throughout town as well. Definitely a fun and interesting time to visit Arcata. Rent Holly Yashi Hideaway to be perfectly located, walking distance to downtown Arcata and all the action.

Pack lightly. Hop in the car. Take a little drive. Arrive at your destination. Remember, it is not always about how far we travel, it’s the memories we make, even when closer to home. While far off exotic locations do indeed sound nice, sometimes a little staycation is all we need for a quick recharge.

Best Autumn Hiking Adventures in Humboldt County

Autumn’s peak season is hurriedly approaching with summer in the rearview mirror here on California’s North Coast. Most tourists don’t realize that the temperatures in Northern California remain at ideal levels year-round – our oceanside paradise gleefully avoids sizzling summer afternoons and frigid winter evenings. We’re still blessed with refreshingly crisp air and colorful maples, ash, and alders every autumn. The Humboldt County wilderness is naturally painted a beautiful blend of forest green, amber, marigold, and crimson, which makes hiking in Northern California one of the premier outdoor activities every harvest.

Experienced hikers, backpackers, and nature photographers naturally choose Redwood Vacation Rentals as their autumn getaway headquarters because many of our cozy, private cottages are set deep in the heart of the vast, picturesque North Coast wilderness. Take hiking in Northern California to the next level with half-day adventures at these four Humboldt County trails.

Elk River Trail

hiking in northern californiaWhile we highly encourage everyone to hike for at least two days in Redwood National Park, sometimes it’s best to avoid crowds and backpack on a genuinely peaceful trail far from civilization. The Elk River Trail, located in the Headwater Forest Reserve near the charming cities of Eureka and Fortuna, is a 9.5-mile out-and-back trail that weaves underneath towering redwoods. This serene hike features unharmed plantlife, the rushing South Fork Elk River, and occasional wildlife sightings. Local coho salmon spawn every winter in the stream, beginning in November, and majestic northern spotted owls peer down from the branches above. Some choose to turn around at the river crossing, which cuts approximately three miles from the journey.

Arcata Community Forest Loop

If you’re searching for a convenient yet breathtaking early morning hike, look no further than the Arcata Community Forest Loop. Part of what makes the city of Arcata so sensational is its proximity to premier beach breaks and lush, preserved forestry. Redwood Vacation Rentals has properties steps from the loop’s trailhead! This 3.9-mile forest loop has mammoth redwoods, rare banana slugs, and diverse plant life. Hikers of all skill levels can easily conquer the occasional inclines.

Trillium Falls Trail

The Trillium Falls Trail rests in the heart of the Prairie Creek Redwood State Park, north of Orick. This moderately difficult 2.6-mile loop features some of the tallest and thickest redwoods in the national park. Hikers have spotted families of elk, deer, and occasionally black bears – it’s imperative to remember what to do if you encounter a black bear. The trilliums don’t bloom in autumn, but the waterfall is quite beautiful when the creek is flowing generously after heavy rainfall. If you’re planning on hiking in Northern California, please don’t skip Trillium Falls.

Tall Trees Grove Loop

hiking in northern californiaThe Tall Trees Grove Loop is one of the most popular trails in Redwood National Park, so expect small crowds of hikers during peak hours. In the morning, however, the trail is sublimely quiet. You can walk directly through many fallen redwoods that have been carved to create a path for hikers. The moss-covered maple trees transform into blazing amber spectacles, and the crystal clear Redwood Creek provides the perfect opportunity for an afternoon picnic. The hike is nearly five miles in total with occasional steep inclines.

Self-Guided Northern California Beer Trail

The state of California has over 900 craft breweries, by far the most in any state and more than twice the amount of second-place Washington. We love our craft beer. California is home to some of the best craft beer brands in the nation: Sierra Nevada, Stone, Green Flash, Ballast Point, and Bear Republic. In 2016, craft breweries in California produced nearly 3.3 million barrels of craft beer, according to the Brewers Association. Which means craft beer accounted for $7.3 billion in sales that year. If you’re not already a self-proclaimed beer aficionado, now might be the time to hop aboard the phenomenon. Luckily for you, many of our Northern California vacation rentals are minutes away from some of the region’s best craft breweries.

Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals has properties scattered throughout beautiful Northern California. Embark on a self-guided North Coast craft beer tour with stops at these exemplary breweries. Remember to plan a sober ride and to please drink responsibly!

Eel River Brewing – Fortuna

Start your craft beer journey in the growing city of Fortuna. Exit off US-101 for a beer flight and an organic grass-fed burger at Eel River Brewing. The brewery is steps from the Eel River, which flows northwest into the Pacific Ocean. Eel River Brewing is the first certified organic brewery in the U.S. The interior is reminiscent of an unpretentious Irish pub thanks to hanging flags, tin signs, green paint, and a long bar. You’ll likely want to enjoy your flight and burger in the inviting attached beer garden. The locals consider Eel River Brewing the best restaurant in the city. You can also try their creamy macaroni and cheese or the fish and chips. Don’t leave without sipping on their Raven’s Eye, a creamy and roasty 9.5% ABV imperial stout with hints of espresso and dark chocolate.

Lost Coast Brewery – Eureka

Choose from many beers on tap.
Choose from many beers on tap.

Your next stop should be at the Lost Coast Brewery in Eureka. Lost Coast was named a top 50 U.S. brewery in 2017 by the Brewers Association. Their taproom is connected to the brewery and distribution center. Stop in for free brewery tour where they bottle over 135,000 beers a day. Meet the giant Lost Coast shark and finish the tour with a delicious pint of the Revenant, a refreshing, full-bodied Citra IPA. Lost Coast also has a popular brewpub on the north end of Eureka, if you happened to skip a meal at Eel River Brewing. They offer some of the best fish tacos and jambalaya in town!

Redwood Curtain Brewing – Arcata

A pint at Redwood Curtain Brewing on the south side of Arcata is an absolute must. The taproom has concrete floors, hanging bulbs, comfy stools, and repurposed whiskey barrels. Of all the breweries on this North Coast beer trail, Redwood Curtain has the best overall beer. Their well-balanced signature IPA utilizes three hop varieties to provide hints of honey, orange, citrus, and pine. Redwood Curtain brews a new flavorful IPA nearly every month, so check back often to see what’s on tap. Regardless of the season, don’t skip the dry nitro Irish stout. This velvety, roasty and chocolatey stout may end up being the best beer of the trip.

Mad River Brewing – Blue Lake

Hop off US-101 for a piney pint of Slammin’ Salmon Double IPA and a beer-battered Pacific cod burger at Mad River Brewing Company in Blue Lake. Mad River slings delicious fish tacos on occasion, although they aren’t on the everyday menu. The taproom is steps away from the scenic Mad River. In the summer months, patrons slip down the road and for a refreshing swim in the river or a beautiful riverwalk. Their spacious patio often has live music with the lush valley as a backdrop.

Six Rivers Brewery – McKinleyville

Six Rivers Brewery is unique for many reasons. Firstly, it’s 500 feet from our offices at Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals. It’s fair to say we’ve tried each of their delicious craft beers more than once. Secondly, this brewpub is known to locals as the “brewery with the view,” because of the sweeping pasture vistas from the back patio. The Pacific Ocean is visible in the distance! Six Rivers recently upgraded their outdoor seating, for those who’ve visited this McKinleyville staple before. Their Moonstone Porter, which was named after nearby Moonstone Beach, is a robust English-style porter worth savoring.

Humboldt Regeneration – McKinleyville

Taste the incredible difference by visiting their taproom, complete with 19 taps of homegrown beer. northern california vacation rentalsOyster Beach is a beautiful, rustic 14-acre property that the owners lovingly restored. The homes at Oyster Beach are cozy and stylish, but simple by design. It is not a resort with manicured lawns, cabanas on the beach, or spa facilities. It is a secluded, wild, and scenic place. Sit around the fire pit, explore the private trail to the beach, or bath under the stars in a clawfoot soaking tub at the Bathhouse located at the center of Oyster Beach.
