Peace, serenity, and calm are all integral parts of your redwoods vacation and spending the day hiking through the forest can bring you much of those feelings. You’ll love just how beautiful the green and browns of the stunning redwoods meld together. It’s honestly something you won’t want to miss out on this season. With lots of the forest floor for you to explore, precisely 132,000 acres to cover when you spend even a few days here make sure to stop and fall for the beauty of the forest.

KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED

Seastars are found in a tide pool at Salt Point State Park in northern California.

We know that during the autumn and winter months you’ll see many different types of animals on California’s Northern Coast, and you don’t want to keep your eyes shut, or you might miss something spectacular sitting in the trees or jumping through the ocean. Fall brings a lovely time for Tide Pool exposure, featuring lots of underwater life you’ll enjoy seeing sea anemones, mussels, crabs, and more. With the middle intertidal zone open for guests to explore many of these plants and animals find tide pools for food and shelter during low tides at Trinidad State Beach. Learn more about touring some of these great California tide pools at Humboldt State University Marine Lab.

While you’re at the beach, keep your eyes open and on the water for Gray Whales! These beauties call the Redwood Coast their home during the spring and summer months, but during autumn and the late winter months, they migrate to warmer waters from Alaska to Baja California. We recommend seeing them from one of the observation decks that dot Humboldt County’s shoreline. Plus, when you’re hiking, keep an eye out of the Black Bears! From spring to fall these large mammals can be seen throughout the forest they call home before they hibernate during the winter season!

From Green to Yellow

Northern California Landscape. Scenic Vista East From Eureka, Humboldt County, California, United States.

Spring and summer bring a vibrancy of lush, greenery to the Northern California coast. Whether it’s deep in the forest, high above the canopy, or along the walls of Fern Canyon, autumn makes the bright chartreuse and gorgeous viridescent shift to a stunning kaleidoscope of wonderful warm browns, rich purples, and vivacious reds, oranges, and yellows. One of the best times of year to experience this immaculate change is during the harvest season. With California having one of the longest and most diverse fall colors than anywhere else you’ll be surprised to find that at any point during autumn, you can come across a wide array of fall foliage.

While some might assume that the East Coast is where you should be for the fall foliage, truly everywhere along the Northern latitude has the chance to make a memorable impression. The difference in California is that as the elevation drops the colors begin to turn, which means you’ll be able to experience beautiful colors from September through November. The best part is that if you miss peak season on the east, all you have to do is just drive to a lower elevation for you to experience peak season on the west.

According to California Fall Color, right now, the Northern Coast hasn’t begun the transformation into fall, but that means it’s a perfect time to book your redwood forest vacation to ensure you’re here during that peak foliage time! Keep updated with all the fantastic fall foliage reports of California, here!

Once you reach the parking lot at the end, you’ll begin your journey to Fern Canyon, which is deep in the redwood forest. Before heading home, head north to Klamath, and dine at the Historic Requa Inn.
