Hot Tubs, Fireplaces, and Low Winter Rates… Oh My! Just cozy up beside that fire. Submerge yourself in the hot tub under a starry winter sky. Or better yet, lounge in the sauna, warming yourself to the core, letting all of your tension melt away on your perfect winter redwoods vacation.
When you take incredible vacation homes with amenities like these and combine them with spectacularly low seasonal rates, winter may just be the best time of year to take a redwoods vacation.
It’s true. Redwoods National & State Parks do see the majority of their visitors during the summer month. Each year thousands upon thousands of travelers flock to the far northwest reaches of California to experience what it is like to be amongst the world’s tallest trees. While the weather may indeed be a bit milder, the crowds at the parks can be much larger in summer. For those seeking a redwoods vacation with a bit more solitude, winter months provide just that. And no worries, the forest canopy that towers above serves as an excellent umbrella for those rainier winter days on the redwood coast.
Be sure to check out Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals for cabins set in the perfect locations – in the redwoods and only a very short ride to Redwood Parks. This winter save 40% or more on bookings and beat the summer crowds. From as low as $150 /night rent the private and authentic Stone Lagoon Cabin, which sit on 2 gorgeous acres only moments away from Redwood National Park. A wood stove in the living room and another in the formal bedroom will keep you plenty warm and cozy during the winter!
Stone Lagoon Cabin is a beautiful and authentic logger cabin (you can see the small holes in the floor from the tree climber spikes!). It is very private and definitely off the beaten path. You are surrounded by nature and can take a nice 1.5 mile walk to the beach and lagoons, walking by herds of wild elk and beautiful horses. At times you can even gaze at wild elk right on the property! This would be an amazing home base for a winter redwoods vacation.
Maybe exploring wide open, secluded beaches is your thing? A cloudy day at the beach is still a day at the beach, and honestly the the Redwood Coast has something quite magical to offer year round. You will never forget the first time that you hear the roar and witness the power of the raging Northern Californian sea during a winter storm. Massive waves crashing onto the shores of absolutely pristine beaches. Dense fog rolling in around you. The beautiful sights, sounds, and smells of the ocean all set to the backup of an ancient redwood forest. It is absolutely stunning! When captivated by it all, do remember to never turn your back on the surf here though. The ocean can be hazardous. Always stay alert and have a great time…the gorgeous beach of the Redwood Coast are more than worth exploring.
Ocean view vacation properties in the quaint seaside town of Trinidad, CA are quite spectacular, especially when the offer magnificent views from the comfort of a private hot tub.
The famous Seascape House & Suite is at the best location possible, right at Trinidad Harbor and next to Trinidad State Beach. This 3 bedroom vacation home provides the most incredible views and the pleasures of the sea with the coziness of home. Explore all the nearby beaches and coastal trails during the day and come back to relax in the Hot Tub in the evening. Pure Winter Time Bliss!
If your winter redwoods vacation happens to land you in Arcata though, you are also in for quite a treat. With Humboldt Bay on one side and pristine Redwood forest on the other, Arcata California is a truly unique and beautiful winter vacation destination. Everything is within walking distance in this small town including many boutique shops and restaurants. During winter the Downtown Arcata Plaza remains vibrant and you can still catch the year-round Arcata’s Farmers Market as well as various other winter events. Check out @VisitArcata for helpful info.
On the second Friday of every month from 6-9 PM, Downtown Arcata hosts Arts! Arcata. This free, self-guided, public art showcase features the work of dozens of local artists and live musicians at several locations around the plaza and throughout town. Many of the businesses showcasing art stay open late offering guests wine, beer and snacks for a donation towards local non-profit organizations. This is a great opportunity to meet local artists and enjoy Downtown Arcata. This is a family friendly year-round event that you must experience on your next redwoods vacation.
Located just 2 blocks North of the Downtown Arcata Plaza in the perfect central location is Arcata’s Classy Craftsman. This beautiful vacation home sleeps 6 guests and not only offers a Hot Tub, but a sauna as well…. not to mention a game room, a sun room and an inviting fireplace in the living room! Classy Craftsman in Downtown Arcata is literally the perfect home for a family, extended family, or a friend’s winter redwoods vacation.
Take advantage of the low winter rates when planning you visit to the redwoods. Vacation homes like these can be discounted as much as 40% during winter. The value is phenomenal and so is the Redwood Coast, no matter what time of year you visit.
This Fall, fall in love with this sweet little home on a gorgeous farm setting in the remote mountains of Northern California. Nestle alongside the Trinity River in Hawkins Bar, just outside of the town of Willow Creek, you will find one of the most darling vacation rentals in CA.
Peach Orchard’s Little Home a wonderful country escape situated on a working ranch in the private riverside community known as Trinity Village just outside of Willow Creek, CA. Unlike many vacation rentals in CA, this home is just a short walk to a pristine private river spot on the wild and scenic Trinity River. For those visiting the coastal Redwood forests of Northern California, the Trinity River is also a must see. Just a short distance inland from Redwood National Park, fishing, river rafting, kayaking, and swimming holes are all abundant on this 165-mile watershed that runs through Trinity and Humboldt Counties.
During the summer months, the Trinity is a sought-after spot for some serious river fun in the mountain sun, but fall is a very special time of year here as well. The colors within the Six Rivers National Forest are beginning to turn to gorgeous yellows, oranges, and reds. There is a slight chill to the air in the evening but the days remain warm and pleasant. And harvest time is here. In addition to peaches, the orchard produces an abundance of apples, grapes, pears, and in October the farm is beginning to harvest their delicious kiwis. Guests staying at Peach Orchard’s Little Home can find freshly harvested goodies in their rental, courtesy of the owners. And from time to time guests staying at the home might even have the potential possibility of taking part in the harvest, depending on what the farm has going on during their stay.
You will absolutely love vacation rentals in CA like this. The rural setting at this magnificent tiny home with all the orchards and livestock make for the perfect country escape. Currently, the ranch has two milking cows and a brand new calf that is being trained to become their next milking cow. Several chickens call the ranch home too. From time to time tours of the ranch may be available so guest can get up close and personal with the animals that reside there. Just inquire with the host upon arrival to see what opportunities are available.
Vacation rentals in CA just got a bit sweeter with Peach Orchard’s Little Home on the Trinity River. This and several other vacation homes in the Willow Creek area can be found at Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals. They offer fantastic coastal vacation rentals in Northern California near the Redwoods as well. When staying at their Willow Creek properties you are only about an hour away from Redwood National and State Parks to the west and an hour to the east you can find the town of Weaverville where there is a rich history and amazing hikes such as the favorite Boulder Lakes Hike which offers impressive scenery of the Trinity Alps.
While many vacation rentals in CA require a minimum stay of 2 nights, Peach Orchard’s Little Home in now accepting 1 night stays, making it the perfect place to stop and rest if you are just passing through the area of Willow Creek on your Northern California adventure. Escape to the real Northern California and experience the perfect country getaway this fall. Peach Orchard awaits you!
With October just around the corner right now is the perfect time to book vacation rentals Northern CA style. Just like Germany, Humboldt knows how to celebrate a good Wiesn… Oktober Fest that is.
Every year 6 million people from around the world attend Germany’s 16 to 18-day beer festival held in October. While Humboldt County does not generate nearly quite as much buzz, we still put on our own annual “Hoptober Fest” modeled after the world famous Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich. Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals has the perfect vacation rentals Northern CA to get you up close and well acquainted with the fine craft beers of the Redwood Coast, not only in October but year round in Humboldt’s many beer gardens and tap rooms.
Like Germany, beer drinking is almost culturally ingrained in Humboldt County.
With so many local microbreweries including the U.S.’s first certified organic brewery as well as one of the first female owned breweries, Humboldt has come to be quite proud of our beer brewing heritage here. It is no wonder why the area pays homage to the art of beer brewing each October, but to be completely honest, beer is a year round celebration in these parts.
The beer gardens of Humboldt County are a place to gather, relax, and soak up some serious suds. Whether you are here specifically during the time of Hoptober Fest or not there is always a chance to sample some of the worlds finest craft microbrews while on the Redwood Coast. Here is a list of some of our local faves:
Creating quality craft beer since 1989, these guys are cranking out some of my personal favorites. Jamaica Red, beers are Porter, and Redwood Stout are all quite unusual and unique. Mad River Brewery truly gives you the Northern California experience every time you raise your glass. Check out their tap room and pet-friendly outdoor beer garden in sunny Blue Lake CA to sample some of their award winning ales, grab a bite to eat, or play a round of cornhole.
Dubbed “The Brew with a View” this is the place to be if you want to try some of Northern California’s best craft beers while overlooking the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. Located in McKinleyville, CA the pet-friendly beer garden of Six Rivers offers not only sweeping views but also a full menu of quality and distinctive beer plus great food that features local and organic ingredients whenever possible. The Hammond Trail Ale is a must try and for something on the darker side be sure to try their Moonstone Porter. At Six Rivers you will find some of the best small batch craft beer coming out of the heart of Humboldt County.
This is Humboldt’s only locally grown beer. That’s right. Regeneration is increasing their own grains and hops and brewing up exceptional craft Farm to Glass beers and serving them up in their sweet little brewhouse and tasting room in McKinleyville, CA. Stop by and enjoy Pizza & Beer night with local fave Pizza Gago serving up some beautiful wood fired pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients. Or get the educational scoop at their Beer Farm Night where Regeneration’s harvesting combine and a tractor is on site along with some demonstrations. Bring the whole family and the dog too.
Located in Arcata, CA, Redwood Curtain brews up multi-dimensional hand crafted ales and lagers for beer lovers of all types. Their Belgian Style beers are highly recommended as well as the very unique Oak-Aged Blackberry Saison. No food is served here, however, you can feel free to bring in your own while enjoying this fantastic beer garden. Also, you can catch their Happy Hour Monday through Friday for $1 off most pints and goblets. Children are welcome as well.
Now one of the most famous breweries and beer gardens on the North Coast of California, Lost Coast first started brewing when there weren’t a lot of craft breweries in existence, especially in California. With their new facility located in southern part of Eureka CA, Lost Coast now bottles up to 135,000 beers and fill 1,000 kegs every day! Their Tasting Room serves up year round favorites such as Great White and Downtown Brown as well as seasonal specials. For the kids, they serve ice cream and floats, and everyone is welcome to join a free tour of the Lost Coast brewing facilities. Also located nearby is the Lost Coast Brewery & Café where their first beer was brewed, and they still serve up some of the best food and beer along the California coast.
Eel River Brewing Company has been blazing a trail in the craft brew industry over the past twenty years. America’s first Certified Organic brewery is located in Fortuna CA, only 15 minutes from the famous Avenue of the Giants where you can see some of the worlds tallest trees. The beer garden and restaurant at Eel River was voted “Best Brewery of the North Coast” in 2006, 2009 and 2010! They serve up great pub style food along with amazing pure, naked and clean brews. Join them for a beer and a meal, or a horseshoe game in our outdoor beer garden where you can catch some of that wonderful Fortuna sunshine. Eel River’s Tropical Blonde is definitely one of my personal favorites on a warm sunny day.

Featured Foodie Destinations on the Redwood Coast:
We start this adventure in the heart of Old Town Eureka, CA at Humboldt Bay Provisions, an all-local tasting room and oyster bar. Sample Humboldt Bay oysters served raw or broiled with a variety of locally produced gourmet sauces. Or grab a seat at their gorgeous reclaimed redwood bar to sip on local beers, wines, ciders, or kombucha. Humboldt Provisions also serves up cheeses, meats, breads, and desserts that are all hand-crafted locally.
Just around the corner is a local fave, Five Eleven, a new restaurant and bar featuring farm fresh North Pacific cuisine, a fantastic wine selection, a diverse menu of signature cocktails, and great live music. When in season, you simply must try their Dungeness Crab “Cocktail”. So yum!

If you are looking for something with an Italian twist, Gabriel’s in Old Town Eureka offers fine Italian inspired dining using ingredients sourced from Humboldt. Also specializing in craft cocktails, local and imported wines.
A great place to drop in for a craft cocktail would be The SpeakEasy in Old Town Eureka. The SpeakEasy is a beautiful and cozy New Orleans inspired blues bar that plays jazz and blues music and have live artists nearly everyday. They offer a crazy selection of local spirits, cider, beer, and wine and have signature cocktail that are to die for. My husband I stopped in here on our last trip to Eureka and had some of the best margaritas in our lives and caught a really amazing jazz band with a full horn section too. This place is spectacular for a date night pre-dinner drink.
Perhaps my favorite foodie destination in Eureka though is located just outside of old town in Henderson Center. Brick & Fire Bistro skillfully blends Mediterranean tradition with fresh local harvest. From beautiful seasonal salads and fire-roasted polenta lasagna, to seafood-stuffed calamari and slow-roasted osso bucco, the menu runs from rustic casual to redefined Italian favorites. This place is a must try when in Eureka, CA.
Now heading North to Arcata, pay a visit to Cafe Phoenix. Cafe Phoenix works directly with local farmers (meat, dairy and produce), as well as local beer and wine makers to create a menu for you that will be seasonally inspired, healthy and delicious. They have a gorgeous outdoor seating area in their onsite garden. Bonus: This is one of the only places I have found locally that make their own nut milk preparations for use in there smoothies and coffee. If you are health conscious and looking for some serious flavor this is the spot for you.
For fine dining with some serious foodie flair, Folie Douce in Arcata is a fully farm to table restaurant serving seasonal, organic, and local meals. They believe that great meals are made from locally-sourced ingredients, and since 1991, have breathed life into our farm-to-table philosophy by cooking with organic and local produce from the Redwood Coast Region. You really can not go wrong with anything at this place. Just take a peak at their menu and you will see what I mean.
Yet a little further to the north in Trinidad CA is another local fave, Larrupin Cafe. A popular choice for birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions, this upscale, enduring venue offers eclectic decor & locally sourced New American dishes. For a special evening out in Trinidad CA this is where it is at.
Visiting the actual farms where many of the afore mentioned restaurants source their ingredients is another great way to experience the foodie bounty of the Redwood Coast. Harvest time on the Redwood Coast offers a fun way to get the whole family involved in the food selection process. Visit the apple orchards of Clendenen’s Cider Works in Fortuna during harvest time in the fall to see the old school cider press in action and sample some of the best cider on the planet. Drop by Wolfsen Farm in Mckinleyville CA to pick bucket after bucket of juicy ripe blueberries. Or stop by Redwood Roots Farm in Bayside to check out their sweet little farm stand and take an educational tour of the farm itself.
But perhaps the best way to really feast you eyes on some Redwood Coast foodie fare is by visiting one of the many local Farmers Markets.
Found on most days throughout the week, local area farmers and producers gather to set up shop and bring you the best the area has to offer. Get your hands on some perfect local ingredients then head back to the perfect northern california vacation rentals to prep something extra special in the comfort of your very own home away from home.

Pacific Outfitters leads a 2 to 4-mile tour of the Mad River Slough. This is truly a must see for all birders!
Eel River Estuary – This is by far one of the richest areas for wildlife in the region. And with a new boat ramp at Pedrazzini Park in Loleta, this is a great place to launch your boat. Summer in CA?
Summer in the National Redwood Forest or Northern California is cooler than you’d expect. If you are not used to warmer, drier air, you’ll want to make sure you are prepare for that. You might also notice a thick fog that rolls through the forests. This summer fog is normal and a part of coastal California life. The fog helps the large redwood trees survive during the dry season by pulling moisture from the ocean inland to keep them alive.
Along with the drier season, many people have summer vacations as children aren’t usually in school and it’s a nice break when the days get longer. Meaning that there will be a lot of people at the National Forests and State Parks because summer always brings an influx of visitors to the coast.
Planning your Redwood Forest Adventure
When choosing one of our rentals and planning your day trips out to the National Forests or State Parks, you’ll want to make sure you have the right clothing for summer hiking. Hiking boots, shorts, and tee-shirts are great options, especially items that are made of cooling material like cotton or lightweight moisture wicking garments. As there are over 170 miles of walking trails throughout the Redwood National Forest and State Parks combined, you’re exploring might take awhile and you will want to be comfortable the entire time.
Along with the right clothing, you’re going to want to either pack a meal or make sure to stop somewhere along the way. After burning all those calories from hiking, we’re sure you’ll be hungry! You’ll find great dining options in Eureka and Arcata as the parks, unfortunately, do not offer any restaurants (for a good reason). If you’re willing to spend a little more, try out Trinidad Bay Eatery and Gallery. Enjoy their famous clam chowder which is known as the best on the West Coast or their delicious blackberry cobbler. Wildberries Marketplace in Arcata is a great option for those hungry for picnic food to take on their trip. Lots of Deli selections and fresh local produce are perfect for lunch. Cafe Waterfront Oyster Bar and Grill is a fabulous, local restaurant in Eureka that sells excellent seafood dishes or head right to Living the Dream Ice Cream for an after adventure snack along the coast.
But, be warned, the small town joints can close as early as 8 pm. Whether you need the fuel before your hike or keep you going throughout the night, these restaurants are places to try out.
When visiting the forests, pack binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for Black Bears as they tend to come out of hibernation from spring to fall. Along with bears, you’ll find an abundant wildlife roaming the forests, everything from Roosevelt elk to marine animals both on and off shore. But you’ll also find that there are plenty of park activities for everyone. Park Ranger programs help guests throughout the parks with guided nature hikes, information on coastal tidepools and history about the culture and ecology of the area. Summer is a time to visit the state parks if you want a lot of information on the beautiful Redwoods and those that call the forest home.
While there are plenty of animals who call the redwood national forest home, so can you this summer season when you vacation with us! Our beautiful and diverse set of vacation rentals offers a great option for families, couples, and groups traveling together. Centrally located in Orick, CA, a small town right on the coast of the Pacific. You’ll find one of our beautiful rentals at Viewcrest Retro Country Home. Life before Curtis was simple. We traveled and we travelled a lot. All we ever had to do was packed up, head out, and enjoy the trip. Soon after adopting this sweet furry guy though, we realized there were going to be a lot more logistics involve with travel. A pet friendly vacation would be a little more involved. Was Curtis going to be able come along at all or were we going to have to board him. If we did bring him, most importantly, would we be able to find pet friendly accommodations that would live up to our standards.
Don’t get me wrong. I have never regretted for a second the decision to make this amazing pooch a part of our family. Like many dog owners, I refer to Curtis as my fur baby. I love him so and am beyond happy to have such a well behaved and handsome pup in our lives.
While a pet friendly vacation may require a bit more planning, it can be done…..
With the rise of independently owned pet-friendly vacation rentals such as those found through vacation rental management companies and sites like VRBO and Airbnb, pet-friendly vacation rentals are much easier to find. Gone are the days when traveling dog owners are limited to sub-par side of the road motels that basically only serves as a place to rest up for a night, but leave much to be desired.
Humboldt County is a premier pet friendly vacation destination. Located in the far reaches of coastal Northern California and home to Redwood National and State Parks, Humboldt and its neighboring counties of DelNorte and Trinity, offer tons of dog friendly accommodations as well as outdoor activities that every pup will love. While dogs are not allowed in Redwoods National Park itself there are trails upon trails outside of the park that are dog friendly and also loads of dog friendly beaches as well. Here is a great list of pet friendly trails and beaches on the Redwood Coast.
When staying in McKinleyville, CA don’t miss out on taking your dog to Hiller Park. This dog friendly county park features a huge off-leash area where dogs can run about and socialize before taking a walk on the 1.5 miles of trails that meander along bluffs overlooking the majestic pacific ocean. Hiller Park sits directly on the larger Hammond Trail which is a really awesome 5 mile stretch of the California Coastal Trail that runs from the Arcata north to Clam Beach in McKinleyville. The Hammond Trail has been voted “best place to walk, jog, or bike” in Humboldt County and if they could, dogs would most likely vote the same.
Our little Curtis absolutely loves walking the trails at Hiller Park. When talking to other dog owners there many say Hiller Park is absolutely one of the best dog park they have EVER been too. I mean come on, there are even dog drinking fountains there! When in Arcata though, Curtis really enjoys the awesome on-leash trails found within the Arcata Community Forest as well as at the Arcata Marsh. And we can’t forget his fave in Eureka, Sequoia Park, location of the annual “Bark in the Park” event, which is a 5K walk/run to raise money for animal welfare groups in Humboldt County. Another fun annual event catering to canines that also held in Eureka is Woofstock, a family and dog friendly event with live music, food, shopping, doggie fun zone, and more doggie delights. When on a pet friendly vacation on the Redwood Coast these are all great stops to make with your furry friends.
